«Tristia dont le titre est emprunte a Ovide est un retour a la culture et a la terre ou Mandelstam situe les sources de la poesie : Homere, Ovide, Catulle, et la Crimee, les contrees de la mer Noire qui s'etendent jusqu'aux monts du Caucase, et qui, pour le poete, sont inseparables du paysage historique, culturel et geographique de la Mediterranee. Ici convergent la pensee juive, grecque et chretienne. C'est aussi, avec les iles Fortunees, le pays fabuleux de l'Age d'or. Le poete vient y chercher le mot vivant dans sa purete originelle. Cette quete du mot retrouve, du mot neuf, est le motif central de plusieurs poemes de Tristia ou il apparait associe a d'autres themes, dans un poeme d'amour comme Tristia, ou dans l'admirable poeme La scene fantomatique luit a peine, ou le chant de l'Orphee de Gluck devient l'accord final de strophes sur le Petersbourg des annees de la guerre civile.
